From Jekyll to Hyde: The Yeast–Hyphal Transition of Candida albicans

Candida albicans is a major fungal pathogen of humans, accounting for 15% nosocomial infections with an estimated attributable mortality 47%. C. usually benign member the human microbiome in healthy people. Under constant exposure to highly dynamic environmental cues diverse host niches, has successfully evolved adapt both commensal and pathogenic lifestyles. The ability undergo reversible morphological transition from yeast filamentous forms well-established virulent trait. Over past few decades, significant amount research been carried out understand underlying regulatory mechanisms, signaling pathways, transcription factors that govern yeast-to-hyphal transition. This review will summarize our current understanding well-elucidated signal transduction pathways activate hyphal morphogenesis response various cell cycle machinery involved subsequent regulation maintenance morphogenesis.
